A Relationship With History

About

Hi, my name is Emily (Higgins) and you have found my work on Scroll For Lore.

With many thoughts about history and no soapbox to stand on, I wondered aloud ‘how to start a website’ so as to share said thoughts and in an ideal world, develop ideas about historical topics and issues with other people.

As for my credentials, I have my BA in History and Sociological and Political Studies (University of Galway), and my MA in Public History (Queen’s University of Belfast).

I decided to divide work under three main categories for ease of the archive.

Let’s Talk About History (Essays) includes my work on your traditional historical topics. When defining my main research interests for a researcher bio I stated they included ‘nineteenth and twentieth century Irish women’s labour and education, as well as women’s cultural spheres.’ If that sounds like a bit of you. But like every lay historian, my interests expand and contract every day and I hope my broadly defined delights take on clarity under this heading.

Besides traditional historical topics, the great big historical industry interests me massively. The state of museums, the direction of repatriation, the status of archives and usage of AI in the world of history all capture my mind and imagination. Writing about this fall under the section So You Want to Chat Historical Industry (Think Pieces).

Finally, my own personal musings about history – how historical perspectives shaped my life and maybe yours; what creative histories do for us as people; and how important or unimportant the study of history is falls under Biased (My Thoughts on History).

I suspect I am not alone in being interested in it all. So let’s consider it all.
